New Ashuk T’salil Totem Pole!
Friday, 15 March 2013 14:31
small_mw002By Thomas L, Chapter Chief Ashuk T'salil

Primary construction of the Ashuk T'salil (Northlakes District) totem pole was completed on 24th of November. The totem pole is a replacement for the original pole that fell down about 20 years ago that was built in the 1960's. The pole is about 15 feet tall and was made of a 99-year old cedar tree from Camp Brinkley that was cut down last December, where it has been worked on continuously for almost a year by chapter members in the Brinkley work shed. The totem pole has three figures on it, which are Bear (top), Squirrel (middle), and Blue Heron (bottom) each is about five-feet tall and had have been worked on immensely. The figures represent Bear as the adult leaders , the squirrel represents the youth , and the Blue Heron represents the whole chapter as Northlakes. Bear is very common, but Squirrel is very rare in native American totems and so is Blue Heron, we had a lot of help from chapter member and master carver Richard White to get the figures just right. Only a few more details need to be carved so that it can be put up at the OA long house, which is at Camp Piggot (near Camp Brinkley). We have used various authentic tools including curved knives and adzes, exacto knives, chisels, and pocket knives (all very sharp). Safety gloves and glasses were donated, as well as metal for the adze blades that were used to carve the core out of the back of the totem pole (10 adzes were created for the rough work, and professional grade tools were used for the figure carving). Our next step is to paint and seal the pole and raise it in time for conclave.

The OA youth in this photograph are Willie B, Murphy B, Thomas L, Galen L, adult leaders are John Ewell, Mike Holton, Chris Lane, Robert Lane, Frank Long.

Old Ashuk T'Salil Pole Identified
Wednesday, 06 March 2013 00:00
missingpolearch20132A photo surfaced out of the collection shared by longtime lodge member Ken H of a pole that has been lost. We have identified the pole in the photograph as the missing Ashuck T'Salil pole.

The pole stood, according to an old site plan, on the right hand side of the longhouse as you faced the building. It was the farthest pole on the right next to the original site of the Sunyakwa pole. The following is a description of the Ashuck T'Salil pole:

"The top figure represents the clan of the Silver Marmot. The cross bar is called the people ladder showing the 10 chapters working together. Below the ladder is the Grizzly Bear showing indomitable outdoor spirit of the Chapter. The man with the copper signifies the wealth and resources of the chapter. The total totem shows the relationship to the lodge and the uniqueness in the lodge of the Chapter."

This is the first photo of the pole to surface in decades and we are excited to share it with the lodge.

Thank you Ken!

T'Kope Featured in New OA Painting
Wednesday, 06 February 2013 00:00
visionoffoundersmall1This summer at the 2012 NOAC the lodge was astonished at the inclusion of our old brotherhood flap in the 100th OA Anniversary painting by official BSA artist Joseph Csatari. The story behind the painting is even more remarkable. The artist chose the 5 most influential lodges in the Order's first 100 years to accompany Unami #1 in the parade of flaps. We are lucky and honored to be there. We should give our thanks to former Lodge Adviser and Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Del Loder who is the main reason for our inclusion.

The painting, Visions of the Founder, is an art piece featuring a young E. Urner Goodman explaining to two Scouts what he envisions for the Order of the Arrow. This vision is of the things of the spirit - brotherhood, cheerfulness, and service - and is depicted in the painting's background.

Limited edition prints and Glisees are available from the National OA Endowment and fully support the work of the endowment.

Longhouse Preparations
Monday, 07 January 2013 00:00

longhouseconstruction157The grand opening weekend of the longhouse April 12 - 14 is fast approaching! Our wonderful contractors are close to being finished with the overall structure of the building and finishing work will soon begin.
During winter break lodge members had the opportunity to help out the project. Over two weekends members cleaned up the construction site, and began the process of cleaning the old siding.

When the old building was carefully de-constructed members knew it was important to save as much as possible. Because of their conservation efforts parts of the old building will survive in the new. The original siding taken from ancient cedar trees from the camp property and lovingly hand split by members of the lodge in the late 1950's and early 1960's will now adorn the front of the building. The tight grains and deep tones of the heartwood were clearly evident as the first courses of siding went up this past weekend.

There will be more opportunities to serve. You can follow us on Facebook or on our longhouse site for project information and notification of the next work party.
