National Public Lands Day
Thursday, 08 September 2016 09:51

npld logoJoin us this National Public Lands Day--September 24th--for a day of brotherhood, cheerfulness, and service. For 100 years the National Park Service has been faithfully preserving America's greatest treasures for our enjoyment, and now it is our time to give back. Help us serve those who have so well served us in one of two places.

Olympic National Park
We will meet from 9:00 to noon at the Port Angeles Visitor Center 3002 Mount Angeles Road, Port Angeles, WA 98362. There, we will help with three projects.
1. Pulling weeds and spreading mulch.
2. Ripping up old log seats and possibly installing new ones in outdoor amphitheaters.
3. Pulling more weeds and possibly doing some demolition at another area of the Visitor Center.
Tools will be provided, but bring your own gloves and (just in case) rain gear. The volunteer coordinator has asked me for a head and vehicle count. Chapter Chiefs please get a tally of how many in your chapter are going and in how many vehicles and get it to me as soon as possible.

North Cascades National Park
We will be cleaning up the Newhalem Campground and possibly doing some trail cleaning in the area. This is a heavy use area with a lot of damage from last year's fires, so our efforts are greatly appreciated. The campground is a 10-minute walk from the North Cascades National Park Visitor Center. Details on what the park would like us to bring and what times they want us to arrive and leave are pending (I will disseminate them as soon as I get them). Unless told otherwise, we will work from 9:00-3:00 (with a lunch break). I suggest bringing gloves, a lunch, shovels, rakes, hedge trimmers, hefty trash bags, and maybe a few wheelbarrows. (This might be overkill, but hey a scout is prepared. Again, I will let you know as soon as I do what the park will provide and what we need to bring.)
