2010fallordeal002Almost eight years after the old longhouse was lovingly deconstructed, Saturday September 11th marked a huge step forward in building its replacement. Following the Ordeal ceremony hundreds of lodge members, friends and family watched as ground was broken in the construction of the new larger structure.

The morning saw candidates and current arrowmen working together to clear the longhouse site in preparations for that evening's festivities. It was a day of ceremony as all persons in camp gathered and paused at 8:46 am at the longhouse site in a moving flag ceremony to remember those who had perished on September 11th 2001. Work then continued until early afternoon.

The groundbreaking was officially started at 5:30 by Master of Ceremonies Chris Z calling the group together and thanking the special guests in attendance. After an invocation from Inductions Vice Chief Logan C, Lodge Chief Brian S gave a history of the project and spoke of the importance of the longhouse to the 1st Peoples of the Northwest Coast.

2010fallbanquet001One hundred thirty Arrowmen, friends and family showed up to the annual Lodge recognition banquet on October 9th 2010 where we honored those people who make the lodge tick. We said good bye and thank you to our old officers and swore in this year's leaders. Master of Ceremonies Chris Z led the evening's celebration of the lodge's first three-peat of Quality Lodge were we also honored our latest vigil class and promoted ArrowCorps502.

At the event we revealed the Founders Award recipients. The Founder's Award was created to honor and recognize those Arrowmen who have given outstanding service to the lodge. The award is reserved for those Arrowmen who memorialize in their everyday life the spirit of achievement as described by founder E. Urner Goodman. The award is a handsome bronze medallion bearing the likenesses of E. Urner Goodman and co-founder Carroll A. Edson. The two recipients for 2010 are longhouse adviser Mike Gaylord and outgoing Lodge Chief Peter H.

tbchdsmall002This fall members of the lodge's Ceremonies, Dance and Story Telling team under Chairmen Tony M, and Keith P have been studying and practicing the Lummi Terrible Beast Dance. This dance was originally given and taught to the lodge by Joe Hillare in 1962. It was performed for many years in our longhouse at Camp Omache. It was reintroduced to the team's repertoire in 1991 and has been performed every couple of years since. The costume of the beast itself is a black bear hide. The lodge's old costume has been missing for decades and we would like to reconstruct the Tob-cha-dud costume so we can perform the dance this spring. We are looking for anyone who has a black bear skin, rug or hide that they would like to donate to the lodge for this purpose.
